A NEW attraction, what the authorities call a motorcycle break-dance, is to be introduced this weekend at three of the malls as part of the Doha Summer Festival.

Salman Mohamed al-Hammadi, head of licensing classification and tourism activities at Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, and vice chairman of the festival organising committee, said four professional dancers would be performing at the Villagio, City Center and Hyatt Plaza, from this Thursday.

They would be in action for three days, starting from 7pm, at the three venues, Salman said. Motorcycles would surround the stage while the dancers would be in action, he explained.

Traditionally, break-dance is a street dance style that evolved as part of the hip hop movement among African-American and Puerto Rican youths in Manhattan and the South Bronx of New York City during the early 1970s. It is normally danced to pop, funk or hip hop music, often remixed to prolong the breaks, and is a well-known hip hop dance style.

Today, break-dancing culture is a remarkable discipline somewhere between those of dancers and athletes. Since acceptance and involvement centres on dance skills, break-dancing culture is often free of the race, gender and age boundaries of a subculture and has been accepted worldwide.

The dance floor would be open to those aged 20 years and above, Salman said.

This is in addition to the other attractions of the summer festival, which continues until August 5. The venues are City Center, Villagio, Landmark, Hyatt Plaza, The Mall, Centrepoint and LuLu.

The attractions include a puppet show, Chinese dragon, acrobat show, Smurfs cartoon show, children’s circus; magic show, acrobats and education workshops. Besides, there are caricature and painting shows at all the venues, drum beatings by girls and mime and live statues.

Meanwhile, Salman said the Qatar Television children’s programme at the Heritage Village, held in connection with the summer festival, was a roaring success. “More than 1,200 children participated in just one day – Saturday”.

It was really a big number and “all of them got gifts”, Salman said.
